My 56K modem never connects above 28,800 or 31,200. What's wrong? (Win95/98)
Step by step instructions for troubleshooting your modem.

  1. First, make sure you're dialing a 56K capable number. You can find your 56K numbers by filling out this brief form Start-Settings-Control Panel
  2. Next, make sure you have a 56K capable modem. To do this, click on Start > Settings > Control Panel, then double-click on Modems.
  3. Inside the new window, you'll see a modem fairly listed. If the modem has the numbers 28 or 33 in it, it's pretty certain you have a 28.8 or 33.6 modem, so the top speed you 'll ever achieve will be between 28,800bps and 33,600bps.
  4. If however you have the number 56 in the modem description, then you probably have a 56K modem. If that's the case, let's go to the next step.
  5. Click on the Diagnostics tab above, and then after it finds your mode, click on the More Info button below. It will attempt to communicate with your modem internally. If it's succesful, it will display a new window with a lot of cryptic information you're unused to seeing.
  6. If an error returns, that indicates your modem or COM port (where the modem goes) is in need of re-installing. Call us at 237-2657 for assistance.
  7. Click OK or Cancel on that window.
  8. Next, ensure that you're using the latest modem drivers. Our modem banks are completely 56K V.90 compatible, so if yours isn't, that may be a problem.
  9. To see if your modem is already v.90 compatible (which is -different- than being v.90 capable), you will need to go to modem manufacturer's web site and download the latest drivers for your modem. Don't know how? Call us at 237-2657 and we'll walk you through it.
  10. If your modem is v.90 compatible, then the speed problem may be lying with two elements beyond our scope - your telephone lines or the quality of your modem.
