When I go to dial the Internet, the error message says it can't find my modem.
This is generally caused by one of two things. We'll cover the easy one first.

  1. Double-click on My Computer, and then again on Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on your Lynchburg.Net icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
  2. An error message will appear. Click Ok or Yes or whatever.
  3. In the new window, you'll see a drop-down menu where your modem is listed. Click on the drop-down menu and select the correct modem that is in your system.
    1. But how do I find out what kind of modem I have? Easy: Double-click on My Computer, then on Control Panel, then on Modems. Whatever you see under Modems is the modem you have.
  4. Once you select the modem you have, click OK, and then try to dial out.
  1. If, however, this doesn't work consistently, you may have a bad modem or COM port (where modems are assigned).
  2. To troubleshoot this, double-click on My Computer, then on Control Panel, then on Modems.
    1. If you see your modem listed there, click on the Diagnostics tab, and then click on the More Info button. This should result in a large window that gives you a lot of information for your modem settings. Click OK and get out of there.
    2. If a dialog box comes up asking to look for your new modem, this means your modem may need to be re-installed. Go ahead and let Windows 95/98 look for your modem, and hopefully assign it a correct COM and IRQ (Interrupt Request) setting.
  3. Whether Win95/98 correctly detects your modem and its port is heavily dependent on whether or not your modem is Win95/98 compatible.
  4. If it detects your modem and installs it to the right settings, good for you. You'll soon be able to get back on the Internet.
  5. If it doesn't detect your modem, you may have to either A)manually install it, or B)remove and re-install your COM ports (in case you're corrupt). Let's cover A first.
  6. To manually install your modem, double-click on Add New Hardware from Control Panel. Next, let it detect the new hardware. This will take a while (under 30 minutes), but it will try to find your modem. If it finds it, great. If it doesn't, choose to install the modem yourself by clicking Select Hardware from List and then Next.
  7. In the new window, click on your modem manufacturer on the left and your modem model on the right. However, if you have your modem's installation floppy disk or CD-ROM with you, insert that into its respective drive (i.e., A:\ or D:\) and then click on "Have Disk..." and point it to the right drive (where you put the floppy or CD-ROM).
  8. This will install the new modem and assign it to a COM port and IRQ address. Restart your computer and now try to log on to the Internet.
  9. If this doesn't work, give us a call at 237-2657 and we'll be happy to help you. Thank you.
