- First, look into the back of your computer and make sure there is a phone line running between the wall jack and your "Line" port in the computer. Without a dialtone, there's little hope for you to succesfully establish an Internet connection.
- Next, make sure your telephone line is indeed alive. You can do this by picking up your normal phone and making sure there is a dialtone. If there isn't a dialtone there, there probably won't be a dialtone for your modem, either. Hang up the phone.
- If you have an external modem (i.e., one that sits on your case), click its on/off button to turn it on and make sure that it is properly plugged into the back of your computer with a cable.
- Next, restart your computer in Windows 95/98 by clicking on Start > Shut Down > Restart the Computer. In Macintosh, click on Special > Shut Down. When your computer comes back on, your internal or external modem should be properly reset for continued usage. That's good.
- When the computer comes back on, and you try to redial, but *still* can't get a dialtone, it looks like A) you're going to need to re-install your modem, or B) buy a new one.
