Can't Establish Dial-Up Connection (Win95/98)
When you can't establish a working dial-up connection, there are many possible problems that may be causing this. This will -at least- help rule out some of those problems.

  1. Double-click on My Computer. (No My Computer? It may A) be Windows 3.1/3.11 or a Macintosh that you're using, or B) there's a window in the way that you must minimize or move out of the way).
  2. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking. (If you don't see the Dial-Up Networking icon, it may A) not be installed, proceed here or B) not be seen by you)
  3. Right-click with the right mouse button on the lynchburg.net (or My Connection or whatever) icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
  4. In the new window that appears, make sure you're dialing the right number.
  5. Click on the tab at the top or the button on the bottom that says Server Types.
  6. Under Server Types, the only check boxes that should be checked are Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP. Uncheck the rest.
  7. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
  8. Server Assigned IP Address and Specify Name Server Address should both be bulleted.
  9. Under Specify Name Server Address, the Primary DNS should be 216.207.176.3 and Secondary DNS should be 216.207.176.9. The rest of the defaults are ok. Click OK once these are correct.
  10. Click OK again for the original connection Properties window.
  11. Optional Tip: if you don't have a shortcut to your Dial-Up Connection (i.e., Lynchburg.Net or My Connection), have them right-click on your dial-up connection with your right mouse button and select Create Shortcut. An error message will appear asking them if you want to place this shortcut on the desktop. Hit Yes. I've found it useful to establish the dial-up connection to the Internet first before starting Internet Explorer or Outlook Express because double-click IE-prompted Dial-Ups tend to return a higher degree of Error messages when connecting.

  12. Now, click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  13. Double-click on Network.
  14. If you are A) not using AOL or another provider, or B) not on a network with other computers, the only services that should be entered under the Network panel are Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP, and (optionally) Client for Microsoft Networks. Have them remove everything except those three by clicking the entries one at a time and hitting the Remove button below.
  15. If you -are- using AOL/other or -are- on a network, leave those in there under Network.
  16. Next, click on TCP/IP and hit the Properties button. In the new window that appears, click on the Wins Configuration tab.
  17. Click a bullet next to the Disable Wins Resolution option.
  18. Click OK. This will return you to the Network panel.
  19. If you don't have Client for Microsoft Networks installed, you may optionally choose to have them install it. This feature is useful for helping Windows 95/98 remember your password.
    1. Optional Install
    2. From the Network panel, click on Add.
    3. In the new window, click on Clients, and then on Add again.
    4. In the new window, click on Microsoft on the left, and Client for Microsoft Networks on the right. Click OK.
    5. This will return you to the Network panel with Client for M$ Networks installed.
  20. Click OK. The computer will copy some files and make some system changes.
  21. If the computer asks you if you want to keep the more current version of a driver, click Yes as often as it asks.
  22. The computer should ask to restart, click Yes or OK.
  23. When the computer comes back on, have them try to establish your dial-up connection to LDN. If you installed Client for Microsoft Networks, you will be prompted for your username and password. Have them put your LDN username in youname field, and then click OK to the right.
  24. It will ask them to confirm your password (which is blank). Click OK again.
  25. This should work. If it doesn't, looks like we will have to re-install Dial-Up Networking.
