- First, make sure you are logged on to the Internet. Double-clicking on Internet Explorer (the big blue e) does *not* put you on the Internet.
- To ensure you're logging onto the Internet, double-click on My Computer, then on Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on the lynchburg.net connection, select "Create Shortcut," and then click Yes to the error message.
- You'll have a new shortcut ("Shortcut to Lynchburg.Net" or something similiar) on your desktop, which you can then double-click on to connect to the Internet first.
- After verifying you're connecting to the Internet, double-click on your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) and attempt to load a web site (such as www.yahoo.com or www.microsoft.com).
- If your browser loads these sites, but not the site you want, check your address. Perhaps you're entering the wrong address? Perhaps the address you're trying to go to was mispelled by you or the person who referred you to it? Are you putting "www." in front of the address when it doesn't to be?
- If your browser doesn't load Microsoft, then you may be having problems with your modem connection.
- How do you test that? Easy - click on Start...Run... and then type 'command' (Without the quotes). Hit Enter, and then at the prompt, type (without quotes) 'ping 208.197.56.3' . If it gives you error messages, you don't have a good dial-up connection. If it says 'Reply from 208.197.56.3: bytes=32 time<10ns TTL=128,' you're fine and the problem is with your browser.
- At that point, you should consider re-installing your browser or calling us for help at 237-2657.
