The name Blackwater comes from the creek which surrounds our pitch on two sides. Blackwater Creek empties into the James River and is an important part of the history of Lynchburg, Virginia.

Virginia Rugby Union The idea for Blackwater Rugby started during the summer of 1997 when Rodney Hall (1st Club President) spoke with Stan Aylor (former President of The Lynchburg Rugby Football Club) about rugby in Lynchburg. Stan believed that rugby could be revived in Lynchburg if someone would just do the leg work.

With this input, Rodney put out flyers looking for rugby players in the fall of 1997 and he got a good response from former players and college students in the area. The first practice was held at Sandusky Park in Lynchburg and it drew 24 players. Practices continued through the fall culminating with the Christmas 7's tournament in Richmond.
