Cycling Returns to the
Commonwealth Games
We are pleased to announce that cycling returns
to the
Commonwealth Games following a one-year hiatus. Taking
the reins in 2001 is the Virginia Championship
Commission, Inc. (VCC), a Roanoke outfit best known
for its East Coasters Virginia State Championship
Mountain Bike Series, one of the leading off-road
cycling events in the east. This year marks the VCC's
exciting first foray into the world of pavement,
wafer-thin wheels, and drop bars. Several improvements
are planned both on road and off, and they are:
1. There will be Marshals. There will be water.
Registration will be swift and orderly. Please
volunteer.
2. This year the ROAD RACE moves to SUNDAY, July 15th.
This race has previously taken place on the venerable
Blue Ridge Parkway. This year, a long loop course is
being planned for neighboring Franklin County. While
the parkway is no doubt the jewel, the 23-25 mile
course will be equally gorgeous, with the added
benefit of local scenery and spectatorship.
3. The Mill Mountain HILL CLIMB Time Trial will be on
FRIDAY, July 13th.
4. The MOUNTAIN BIKE race will return to Franklin
County Recreation Park on SATURDAY, July 14th. This
5.2 mile course was pioneered by the East Coasters
Virginia State Championship Mountain Bike Series, and
combines the best elements of facility, course, and
venue.
This year, the effort will focus on improving the
events at every level. Ideas and comments on how we
might reach this goal are welcome, as well as your
experiences and insights. Please contact Kyle Inman by
calling 540-293-0317, or email kyle@bikeva.com.
