Making Waves

Purpose: This page and all the others in this series were made using Microsoft Word 97. You can make your own web pages with your own content almost as easy as you can type a word processing document. This lesson is designed for Lynchburg City School teachers and the software that they have access to.

To do this lesson you may want to print a copy of this page for reference. You may also do this lesson by having this page up in your browser and also have Microsoft Word 97 running. Then you can switch between programs easily.

In a Nutshell: All you need to do is type whatever text, table, graphic etc. into word 97 like you always have. Then go to the file menu and "save as HTML". Once that is done you can format the background add links and all kinds of cool stuff.

  1. Open Microsoft Word 97 and begin a document like you always have.
  2. Type in some text: talk about yourself, teaching, family, hobbies, anything. Format that text so that it looks good to you.
  3. Go to the "File" menu and select "save as HTML", name your file, then click save. A box will appear telling you that some of your formatting will be lost, continue with the save, click OK. (You have just created an HTML document)
  4. To select a background go to the "Format" menu and select "Background", then either choose a color or "Fill Effects".
  5. To put a horizontal line across the page go to "Insert" "Horizontal Line".
  6. To put in a picture "Insert" "Picture".
  7. To create a link highlight some text or a picture and then click on the "Insert Hyperlink" button or select from the "Insert" menu "Hyperlink". Then type in the URL in the dialog box that appears, and click "OK".

That's all there is to it! Now to publish that document to the Web is another story. (Maybe a good topic for another in-service?)
