Test the Water

Purpose: To help you learn to navigate your way around the World Wide Web using a browser.

Part A

Look at your monitor and see if you can locate each of the following:

These are used to move around in your browser.

  1. Scroll up and down to view all the contents of this page.
  2. Click your cursor in the address line and then type the following: http://www.lynchburg.net (do not hit the enter key yet)
  3. When you hit the enter key you will jump to the homepage for Lynchburg.net. To return to this lesson page all you will need to do is click on the back button. Now try it!
  4. Now that you are back here you can go back to Lychburg.net by clicking on the forward button and then back here by clicking back. Try it!
  5. Click on the home button and you will be taken to whatever location is set as the "home" site for this computer. Try it and then come back.

  6. Part B

Locate the pull-down menu, at the top of your screen, labeled "Go". The "Go" menu keeps a record of the most recent sites that you have visited. To go to any of these sites all you do is click on the "Go" menu and then click on the site you wish to visit.

    1. Click on the "Go" menu and read the list of sites listed there.
    2. Which site is checked? What does that indicate?
    3. Try clicking on each of the sites listed and see what happens. Then use the go menu to get back to this page.

    4. Part C

Locate the "Favorites" button if you are using Internet Explorer or the "Bookmarks" button if you are using Netscape.

      1. Type, in the address line, http://encarta.msn.com/EncartaHome.asp, then hit enter to visit that site and then return to this page.
      2. Notice that the text for the above URL (address) is a different color. Place your cursor on that text. What happens to the shape of the cursor? If the cursor makes the shape of a hand then that text or picture is a link.
      3. Click on the text link in item 1 in section C. What happens?
      4. If you find a site that you like while surfing you can create a marker so you can get back there at some time later without remembering the entire URL. Go back to the Encarta page and then up to the "favorites/bookmarks" button. Click on the "favorites" button then click on "add to favorites" and then click "OK".
      5. You have just created a favorite or bookmark for that site. Click on the "favorites" button again and see if you can find the Encarta site listed. Click on it and see if it takes you to that site.

Part D:

      1. Scroll back up through the text on this page and locate the words that are listed in either blue or pink. Those are called hyperlinks or just links.
      2. Click on one of the links to see where it takes you and then come back to this page.
      3. Try any other links that you can find on this page.
