Our
History:
The Calvarymen is a Gospel singing group,
having its origin in 1966. The group started as a quartet singing hymns and gospel songs
with 4-part harmony. The founding members were Gwynn Ramsey (bass), Charles
"Buster" Shaeff (baritone), Bobby Tuggle (lead), George Worley (tenor), with
Norma Tuggle as pianist. Practices were held weekly in the Tuggle home. This was during
the time when Calvary Baptist Church was very young and still meeting at Leesville Road
Elementary School. After moving into a new sanctuary and educational facilities on
Timberlake Road in 1967 practices have continued weekly.
In 1967 Liz Anderson became the pianist for the Calvarymen and continued in this
capacity until 1998. During the 1990s Pam Anderson was pianist a significant number
of times. Robyn Ramsey began as the Calvarymen pianist in 1998.
Through the years the Calvarymen have become known in the central
Virginia region and as a result the group receives many invitations annually. Themed
programs may be presented at other churches, revivals, civic clubs, health care
facilities, benefits, etc. At Calvary Baptist Church the Calvarymen are scheduled to sing
at a worship service monthly and present one concert annually.
In addition to the founding four, many men have sung with the Calvarymen for
different lengths of time: Mark Beck (tenor), John Covington (bass), Rick Foster
(baritone), Mike Griffin (baritone), Joe Hyman (tenor), Jim Kincaid (tenor), Marvin
McBride (tenor), Jimmy McKinney (tenor), Bobby Poindexter (tenor, Director), Bob Turner (baritone)
and Floyd Watson
(baritone/bass).
The Calvarymen have become a seven-man ensemble with the following
men participating: Keith Cox (baritone), Terry Hutchens (baritone/bass), Emmett
Kidd (tenor), Don Powell (bass), Gwynn Ramsey (bass),
Dave Taylor (bass), and George Worley (Lead). The ten men now associated with
the Calvarymen have given 137 years of ministry in the organization. When the need arises, a new member may be chosen by audition.
Musicians (other than those already mentioned) who have played for the
Calvarymen include: Tim
Echols (bass guitar/mandolin/sound technician) and Ricky Poindexter (drums).
Presently Mike Gilbert
serves as a sound technician and Nick Vance plays bass guitar.
The objective of our singing is to praise God for coming into our lives, and to
encourage lost souls to come to Jesus and be made right with him through faith.
